Bangkok number two destination in YouDiscover index
Bangkok ranked second of top destinations in South East Asia on travel platform YouDiscover. Siem Reap came in first overall but Bangkok had the most diverse accommodation options as well as cheapest accommodation and came in first in number of activities. Bangkok came ahead of Singapore, and ranked highly due to its diverse nightlife, activities and entertainment. The locations were chosen out of 93 destinations in 11 countries.
GrabFood continues to grow as it saw four million orders in the first four months of 2019 alone, that surpasses the total of 3 million orders for the entire year of 2018. GrabFood was launched in February 2018 and became the top food delivery platform by October 2018. GrabFood will expand its delivery service beyond Bangkok and Chiang Mai, to at least six more cities in Thailand this year. Grab’s partnership with Central has enabled the business to expand rapidly. As many as 44 percent of consumers rate GrabFood as their online food delivery platform of choice.
The Board of Investment has approved 18 foreign firms for expansion of their investments in Thailand. The investments, valued at 2.76 billion baht, will employ up to 897 local staff and are in medical equipment, trade, gas equipment for automobile airbags and Research & Development. So far this year 69 firms have received BOI approval, an 18 percent drop from the same period last year. However, investment values are much higher, with a total of 9.69 billion baht, a 99 percent increase from the same period last year.
New economic stimulus measures have been introduced including tax breaks for purchasers of homes and condos valued up to 5 million baht. Other tax deductions include spending on school textbooks, uniforms, e-books and sports equipment. Purchasers of OTOP products valued up to 15,000 baht will also be able to take a tax deduction and businesses that invest in point-of-sale, e-tax invoices and receipts and e-withholding will be allowed to take a corporate tax deduction up to two times. Domestic tourists will also be allowed to deduct up to 15,000 baht in expenses for trips to major cities and 20,000 baht for two-tier provinces.
